What we’ll be covering here is a popular online game (which can be sometimes found in land casinos) called Red Dog (also known as Red Dog Poker). It’s a card game that’s a simple variation of “Acey-Duecey”, “In-Betweens”, and “Between the Sheets”. The rules of this game are easy to learn and understand and once you get a handled on it can be a really fun game to play.

A Red Dog player first sits down in front of the dealer at the Red Dog table. The poker ranking of the cards are used, the suits are irrelevant and aces are considered high cards. When you’re starting your Red Dog game online, you’re first going to want to place a wager and click the deal button in the screen. After doing so, two cards will be dealt face up on the table. If the cards are not consecutive or equal, then the dealer announces the spread, which is the amount of card values in between these two cards. (example: If the two cards are 3 and 8 then the spread is 5) You now can increase what you’re wagering up to the amount of your original bet.

A third card is now dealt face up. That bet you originally made means you’re betting that this third card will be ranked in-between the first two cards dealt on the table. This means that the probability of you winning will depend on the spread of the first two cards. If this third card matches any of the two cards or is outside the two cards then you lose.

Your winnings on this are equal to the Red Dog payout table:

1 card spread = Pays 5:1
2 card spread = Pays 4:1
3 card spread = Pays 2:1
4+ card spread = Pays 1:1

If we look at the payout table and then compute the player’s edge, then optimal Red Dog strategy suggests that you should only raise your bet if the spread is 7 or more - no matter how many decks are used.

Now let’s talk about some other situations you may encounter while playing Red Dog. If the two cards you are initially dealt are consecutive (example: a 4 and a 5) then the hand is a push. The reason why it’s a push is because since the two cards are consecutive (like 4 and 5) then there’s no way you could win (there’s no number between 4 and 5)! This push means your bet gets refunded.

Another unique situation you may come across is if the two cards dealt face up are identical (example: a 4 and a 4). Now a third card is dealt by the dealer. If this third card is identical to the first two cards (example: a 4, 4, 4) then you get a payout of 11:1. If this third card is not equal to the first two cards then the hand is a push and you get your money back.

This is one of those fun quick games with easy rules that are great to play when you want to take a break from more intense casino games. Every poker player knows the importance of hitting the royal flush. A? K? Q? J? 10?. It’s really freaking hard to get.

There has been numbers of questions raised by poker gurus and casino experts on the odds of hitting a royal flush. Some of these poker teachers say that it takes 40,000 games just to get one and other say that not even after playing 40,000 games would you be assured of getting a poker hand with a royal flush.

Ok, so we can reasonably figure that out of every 40,000 hands we see at a casino we’ll hit on a royal flush. But what about the other times? Plus, there’s gonna be times that even if you do play 40,000 hands and you still might not see one! Then you might play your next 40,000 hands and hit on two royal flushes! That’s the gnarliness of poker odds – what comes up in your hand is never set in stone. Of course, it pisses all of us off when we get bad hand after bad hand after bad hand, but it comes down to odds.

Maybe you’ve had the experience of doing some poker sessions at the casino in the past in which you never hit a royal flush or even a full house. You keep thinking it’s gonna hit but it never does – why?

The Royal Flush Experience

To get enlightened on this, head online to your favorite online poker website (full tilt poker and poker stars come to mind) and practice at home. There really isn’t a difference in terms of odds when you’re playing in your jammys at home compared to slugging it out at your local brick-and-mortar casino. Of course online you don’t get the smells of the casino, including the body odor of the stench-basket sitting next to you that hasn’t bathed in a couple weeks. Or the 75-year old woman that used to be a hottie about 40 years ago but now looks like a leather coat. It’s basically an ace-high straight flush, it’s the highest ranking standard poker hand, and what you’re asking for is that one of them to be dealt to you. The probability of hitting a royal flush is 0.00003232. Blech.

Everyone Has the Same Horrendous Odds of Hitting a Royal Flush

Just know that even professional poker players (even Johnny Chan) are going to always have the same chance of hitting a royal flush as you would, so there is really nothing much more you can do. I know there’s going to be some of you out there that are going to want to debate me on the merits of online poker play – maybe you’ve been burned at crap casinos. Stick to the casinos that have had a history of solid fair play and stay away from the nasties and you’ll be fine.

You’re always going to get talking head poker experts and online game gurus spouting off with wack-job reactions regarding the royals. Some may see that in online casinos since a programmer has made the system and they have been the ones who have set up the rules and mechanics – they can fix it so they get crazy good hands and everyone else gets nothing. Opinions are like butts – everyone’s got one. Doesn’t mean I want to hear yours. The logic though is undebatable, it’s hard to get a royal flush, so feel good when you hit one.

ChanPoker Closes Down: The End for the Johnny Chan Casino

Big news has just gone down in the poker room world: ChanPoker.com has closed down.

Chan Poker, which was fronted by two-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) champion Johnny Chan, is officially closing its online doors on August 21. This was shocking news to me as the flashy internet poker website had a great design and with a super-popular name behind the casino. It was a member of the Ongame Network – as a member of that network they were forced to close their membership of American poker players due to the UIGEA act.

What’s up with Johnny Chan?

If you recall one of our earlier posts about the Johnny Chan Academy Dealer School then you read about former instructor Nick Ciavarella who mentioned in the comments that the Johnny Chan Academy had closed down. So is there something else going on here? First the Chan Academy closes down and now Chan Poker closes down? Is there something going on behind the scenes in the Johnny Chan poker world that may have affected both of these businesses closing their doors?

The closing of Chan Poker is surprising since they launched the poker room with tons of publicity back in 2006, with a booth at the Lifestyle Expo and much discussion at the 2006 World Series of Poker.

According to ChanPoker, there continues to be an effort by ChanPoker.com to find another online casino to take over the player database and honor player point balances because right now ChanPoker players must be feeling very disillusioned.

So if you’re a ChanPoker player, make your withdrawal request immediately. They’ve lifted some of maximum limits for withdrawal methods to make it easier for players to take out their cash.

With the crazy upswing poker is going on, you know there’s gonna be spinoffs of the game. But that’s the way it is with everything that gets huge in popularity. You know the hit television sitcom show Friends? Well that show had the spinoff Joey. How about Cheers - “Where everyone knows your name”? That spawned Frazier.

So as with all of these spinoffs – we get some good spinoffs and we get some downright repulsive spinoffs. We all have our thoughts on Joey and Frazier – good and bad. Continuing with this trend poker has its new spinoff - Casino Hold’em.

Getting Into the Workings of Casino Hold’Em

Casino Hold’em is a new game, created by Stephen Au-Yeung in 2001, that is basically a variation of the famous Texas Hold’em Poker. The difference is that Casino Hold’em is played against the dealer and not against other players.

The game is played by placing a wager on the Ante area and clicking the Deal button. After you do this, the two hole cards are given to the player, and another three community cards will be dealt face up in the middle. This is known as the flop. After revealing the three cards, the player has two choices. You can fold or you can call. If a player folds, it means that you now forfeit the cards and ante wager, while if you call, the bet will always be two times the actual size of the ante wager. A call would also mean that the player can continue playing. Those who continue playing will be given the chance to use another two community cards that would be dealt in the middle.

Since the game is between the dealer and the player, the objective of the game is to make their best hand possible from the two hole cards and the five community cards. At this point you’re hoping to everything almighty that you have a better hand than the dealer. The dealer should have a hand that is equal to a pair of fours or better. If the dealer does not meet this criteria, a push will happen where the ante wager will be paid in line with the payout table. However, the dealer will win if he qualifies and has a hand that is better than the player’s hand. If the dealer wins, both the player’s ante and bet are lost. Another situation you might find in this game is when a dealer qualifies but the player still has a superior set of cards, the call bet will be paid out even money and the ante wager is also paid.

Different casinos do Casino Hold’em games differently – with different variations and bonuses. Some of the games offer a bonus side bet also identified as AA+ side bet which is generally based on the player’s two hole cards and the first three community cards or flop cards. The payment for these bonuses may vary from one game to another.

Casino Hold’em may just be another variation of the Texas Hold’em Poker. But the game is equally fun and can be enjoyed by many poker enthusiasts. Hell why not throw on a Frazier or Joey episode while you’re at it and enjoy multiple spinoff action.

Casino Hold’em Rules

The game starts with each of the Casino Hold’em players putting down an ante wager.
Each player and the dealer gets dealt two cards face down. You may look at your own cards. Three community cards will be dealt at the table center (flop).
You must now decide whether you’re going to call or fold. If you call, you must call to a sum equal to 2x the ante bet. If you fold, you give up your ante bet and your cards.
Two more community cards will be dealt by the dealer – making the cards a total of five. Dealer will now turn over his cards.
Score your hand according to the highest poker value possible of your two cards plus the five community cards. The dealer is also going to be doing this using his two cards and the five community cards.
Dealer must have a pair of fours or better. Otherwise, the ante will be paid according to the ante pay table and the call bet will push.
If the dealer has a pair of fours or better and beats you, then you lose both the ante and the call.
If the dealer has a pair of fours or better and you still beat the dealer, then the ante will be paid according to the ante pay table and the call bet will be paid 1:1.
If the dealer has a pair of fours or better and you tie with the dealer, then the ante and call bets will push.

Wingows Poker Purchased by Walker Poker

Wingows Gaming has been purchased by Walker Poker.

We don’t know currently how much this Walker-Wingows deal was for, but the essence is that WalkerPoker.com, which is operated by Colkom Inc. has taken over all assets of Wingows.com, which includes the entire Wingows Poker player database.

Wingows Poker, which has been running their online casino since 2006, was operating at first on the Dobrosoft network. Late 2006, the Dobrosoft network was sold off to Digital Gaming Network, based in Panama and Canada. Late 2007, Dobrosoft took over the company yet again, after DGN did a poor job of operating Wingows.com and the casino network – the new Wingows network was now named Gold Chip Network. Right after the Gold Chip Network (GCN) took over Wingows.com, it was found that DGN operators were embezzling escrow funds – which are supposed to be deposited in order to ensure casino player funds. This Wingows scandal really shocked the player base – causing many loyal and die-hard players to drift away from the internet poker casino.

The Wingows Scandal Fallout

What ended up happening was that Wingows compensated their poker players and casino affiliates from the company’s own money – affecting their bottom-line but hopefully regaining some measure of respectability and trust in the casino world.

“We tried to recover as much as possible but the loss was too big to handle at a short period of time. Most of the people got their money back from private company resources,” said a Wingows official. “We have come to a point where the network lacks the liquidity to recover itself and player’s money. Walker Poker ensured that it will do its best to help in recovering old funds.”

According to our sources, Wingows poker players lost at least $500,000 in poker player money when DGN was operating the network – and this doesn’t even include the loss of rakes! Wingows officials are hoping that this pickup of the company by Walker Poker will signal a new turn for the company which up to this point has been mired in controversy.

“We have decided to contribute 25% of the income from Wingows Poker players back to the players and affiliates who didn’t get their money. We believe most of the players and affiliates will get their money back in the first couple of months.” said the Walker Poker CEO.

What about the money I have in my Wingows Poker account?

The Colkom and Walker Poker CEO has spoken on this issue as such: “This will be a “per player” situation. Walker Poker team will contact each and every player with funds in his account and will work out the best way to recover his funds. We promise that all Wingows Poker players who have funds in their accounts will receive special bonuses and incentives to join Walker Poker and help them get their money back and of course a better poker environment”.

We’re all familiar with poker – it’s an uber-famous card game played in casinos worldwide. We’re going to be taking a look at one of the latest spin-offs: Tequila Poker.

Tequila poker can be played in two game modes, both in the same hand. The two modes are High Tequila and Tequila Poker. Poker Tequila uses the original ranking of a five card traditional poker game. The players can form one pair, two pairs, three-of-a-kind, straight, flush, full house, four-of-a-kind, flush, straight flush and even a royal flush. The rankings of the hands are the same in High Tequila as they are in Tequila Poker, but the point system is different. In High Tequila, the aces have a value of eleven points, picture cards jack, queen, and king are worth ten points, and the other cards have the actual points as it is. As it can be noticed, the point system is just about the same as in Blackjack.

Poker & Tequila with a Twist

The game starts when the initial four cards are dealt to you. Then you have to choose which of the two modes you’re going to play. It’s also during this time when you can choose to fold the hand or continue playing. If you choose to play, you have to double the ante, however if you fold, the ante is forfeited. After you’ve chosen to play, doubled the ante and selected which mode you’re going to continue with, the next two cards will be revealed. Out of the total six cards dealt, the best five cards will be used to create the winning set of cards. Based from the selected mode of the game, the player with the highest cards in High Tequila, or the highest rank in Tequila Poker, the winner will then be revealed.

Just like when you’re playing standard poker games, you need to have good judgment on when you should be increasing the bet or when to decide to fold your hand. If you really want to get serious about winning the game on a regular basis, it’ll be helpful if you learn the different strategies in poker. Both modes are equally challenging so you’ll probably have a good time whichever one you choose. Be it Tequila Poker or High Tequila, the highest set of cards will have the highest earnings.

This game is just an example of the many variations of poker that have been springing up recently.
