The depth at defense is astounding and in simple terms winning the gold for Canada is like winning all four major sports in America at the same time.

RUSSIA (+$240)

Just as talented as the Canadians , but missing just a little depth on defense. Should make it to the Gold medal game with the amount of skill they have on offense and anytime you have Evgeny Nabakov in net you have to feel good about yourself. Russia has the best 1-2 punch in the tourney with Evgeny Malkin and Alexander “The Great” Ovechkin. Russia is big , strong, fast, and ready to make a splash in Vancouver.

The Swedes always seem to have a chance at winning the gold and this year is no different. 2009 NFL Super Bowl Overview & Betting Recap

What a Super B0wl! I bet not many people bet on the under for the Super Bowl, but that’s exactly what happened! Here’s a recap of the big storyline in the game, the battle of the two quarterbacks Drew Brees and Payton Manning and what it meant for the Super Bowl and for sportsbook betters. The Rise of Drew Brees

Heading in to the Super Bowl, I highly criticized the betting line of -4.5 for the Colts preaching that it was far too low for a team as strong as the Colts. I ignored all the hoopla surrounding the eventual Super Bowl XLIV champion Saints, refusing to tag them personally as a “team of destiny”.

The hardship of the city of New Orleans and the tremendous season of the Saints was lost to the wayside of what the Colts did in the 2009 NFL betting season and the deafening legacy of Peyton Manning. I hate admitting when I was wrong, but I have never enjoyed being wrong more than in Super Bowl XLIV.

A city mired in depression, catastrophe and destruction celebrated their very first Lombardi Trophy in style and it couldn’t come at a better time. With Mardi Gras just a week away from kicking off, the celebration in New Orleans will last forever. And to be honest, no city is more deserving.

Vindication had to be sweet for Drew Brees, especially winning in Miami. Brees was ironically jettisoned by the Chargers and thought about playing in Miami before coming to New Orleans, where he felt a cosmic calling luring him to one of the NFL’s worst teams. Returning to Miami with the Super Bowl trophy in play, Brees would not be denied. Throwing 32-of-39 passes for 288 yards and 2 touchdowns, Brees submitted one of the best Super Bowl performances by a quarterback in history.. He tied Tom Brady’s completion record and secured the second highest efficiency rating behind Phil Simms. On a team that has never won a Super Bowl, as a player that had been shunned by NFL franchises and in a situation where he was an underdog, Drew Brees emerged as the MVP of the biggest game of the season.

Peyton Manning, perhaps the best quarterback in NFL history, was picked off for the game clinching score and despite all his marvels this season, he wasn’t able to secure the victory. But I’m not about to lay the blame on Manning.

In fact, the reason the Colts lost the game was because his receivers simply couldn’t keep their hands on the ball. Reggie Wayne ended the game by letting a ball slip through his gloved hands in the fourth quarter. Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon were also unable to keep plays alive. Manning dropped a ball in to the hands of Dallas Clark in quadruple coverage, but that was the only spectacular play of the day for Peyton.

Nothing typified this game more than Collie lunging for the onside kick that opened the second half and having the ball bounce off his shoulder pads. First of all, players in those situations should never dive for a ball that doesn’t crest the 10-yard marker because it would be a foul in the first place. You can’t give a team like New Orleans momentum and that’s exactly what Collie did by diving for a ball that wasn’t in play in the first place.

That’s the end of my “the Colts should have won the game” rant. I can’t hate on a city, a team and a player like Drew Brees that is so deserving of a Super Bowl victory. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the subsequent mismanagement following the disaster, and all the continuing social difficulties that have followed since then, the Saints have given the city of New Orleans something to cheer for yet again.

I shouldn’t be surprised by the Saints victory. I really shouldn’t. But I am. I never once believed that Peyton Manning would let the Super Bowl slip from his hands. Yet I underestimated what it means for a team to play for a city that deserves the victory so much. And again, I seriously devalued just how good Drew Brees can be when everything is on the betting line. For the record, Brees romped past three future hall of famers in Favre, Warner and Manning to win Super Bowl XLIV.

Drew Brees will be remembered for a lot of things when his career ends. His meteoric numbers will jump out on the stat sheet. The story about the relationship he had with his mother will be highlighted. The fact he was jilted by the San Diego Chargers will certainly gain some steam. Yet nothing will stand out more than Brees substantiating hope to the city of New Orleans.

The Saints will march back home to a rousing applause from their fans, while Drew Brees can rest assured that he has accomplished more with a Super Bowl victory than most quarterbacks ever can. It’s one thing to keep a monkey off your back, or overcome the betting spread as an underdog. Validating the prayers and desires of a downtrodden city, Brees has emulated what a champion should be to the people behind him.

The Fall of Peyton Manning

The gushing love fest for Peyton Manning came to a screeching halt at Super Bowl XLIV when he failed to clear the Super Bowl spread and was run out of the building by the Saints. Now just 9-9 SU in the playoffs, Peyton Manning’s legend has returned to Earth to reside amongst the mortals. It’s not like losing the Super Bowl is going to make him any less eligible for the hall of fame when he retires, but people remember the times when a quarterback loses the Super Bowl. Just ask Dan Marino and Rich Gannon.

Manning was frustrated early on the by the Saints’ defense in the Super Bowl and with a pick-six that put the game out of hand, Manning was the one holding the bag when the Colts were upset by the team of destiny. Completing 31-of-45 passes for 333 yards and a touchdown, along with the pick, is subpar for Manning but he also had a bad day from three of his main receivers.

Pierre Garcon dropped three surefire first-down catches. Austin Collie not only dropped a first-down pass, but he also lunged for an onside kick that hadn’t gone ten yards to begin with . Reggie Wayne allowed a touchdown pass to slip right through his fingers on the final drive of the game. It’s not like Manning didn’t come to play, and his receivers deserve as much of the blame for the loss as he does.

The injury to Dwight Freeney and the season ending loss of Bob Sanders also killed the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV betting. Even with those injuries, the Colts were able to hold the Saints to 24-points offensively and made the UNDER the bet to take.

That being said, Peyton will be the one to blame at the end of the day. He’s the quarterback and the league MVP. Touted as the greatest quarterback to ever walk the planet, and with the stats and broken records to prove it, he needs to assume the responsibility. That’s the unfortunate side of being the quarterback – when all is said and done, you’re the guy with fingers pointed in your direction when the dust settles.

In prop NFL betting, the Colts have opened the season as 6/1 favorites to win Superbowl XLV at Cowboys Stadium in 2011. They’re trailed in the AFC by the Chargers who have 8/1 odds despite the ongoing curiosity of LaDanian Tomlinson’s dramatic drop-off and the presence of Norv Turner. Holding pace are the Super Bowl champion Saints at 8/1 as well, and for now they’re the benchmark in the NFC. The Cowboys, Packers and Vikings are 12/1 to win Super Bowl XLV.

The kudos from the oddsmakers at BetUS notwithstanding, Peyton Manning has a massive mountain to climb in 2010 betting. After coming off a dazzling MVP season in which he went 16-1 SU as a full game presence, Manning must win a championship to validate all the hype surrounding him. It’s honestly an obstacle that he built himself, and we as fans love to scrutinize greatness in an effort to legitimize the history of the game. When all is said and done, Manning’s numbers will probably set the records across the board, but if his number of Super Bowl rings doesn’t match the other greats in history, then his place therein will be questionable.

Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw both won four championships, leading all quarterbacks. Behind them, Tory Aikman and Tom Brady have three each as starters, while Steve Young earned two as a backup to Montana and one on his own.

For now the addiction to hyping up Peyton Manning has run in to a brick wall, and rightfully so. Manning did not just lose Super Bowl XLIV, but he also lost a fair chunk of the adulation that he’s enjoyed this season. Even I was quick to say that the Saints would only win if Peyton Manning let them, and maybe I was right because of the pick-six. I still place Manning as one of the greats no matter if he ends his career with one ring or multiple. But the greatest? That’s a question only Manning can answer and his quest for a holier grail than Super Bowl XLV starts on the road to Arlington.

2009 NFL Divisional Playoff Matchups Overview & Betting Odds

In the NFL, we are coming down to what is known as the “nitty-gritty.” The conference semi-finals are about to kick off, and they offer tremendous wagering opportunities for BetUS customers.

The Vikings, who entered a whole new world when Brett Favre became the starting quarterback, are a 6/1 shot to win the Super Bowl.

In the AFC, the Baltimore Ravens surprised many with the ease with which they handled the New England Patriots in the opening round, and they travel this Saturday to Lucas Oil Stadium, where they are six-point underdogs to the Indianapolis Colts. In this game, a lot will depend on whether the Colts can slow down that running game of Baltimore, which rambled for 234 yards in Foxborough, and that will be the key for Indy, which is the +275 future book favorite to win the Super Bowl, to advance. The Ravens have now won three playoff games on the road since John Harbaugh took over as coach, and are a 12/1 shot to capture the Super Bowl title.

Rex Ryan said of his New York Jets, “If we get into the playoffs, look out.” Everyone’s looking closer after they beat the Cincinnati Bengals in the first playoff round, and now the Jets are going to a warmer climate in San Diego, where they are catching 7.5 points from the Chargers. The Jets had the #1 rushing attack in the NFL this season, and they still have a mountain to climb, which is reflected in 18/1 odds to win the Super Bowl. They are facing the team with the longest current winning streak in the league. The Chargers are respected enough that they are at +350 to capture Super Bowl glory, right behind the Colts. The Jets are arrogant and confident, just like their head coach. Do they have enough to break San Diego’s eleven-game winning streak?

Ravens made history last Sunday, crushing the Patriots 33-14 and becoming the first visiting team to win a playoff game at Gillette Stadium, EVER. From literally the first play of the game, Baltimore owned this matchup. They picked off Brady three times, unheard of in the postseason against the Patriots. The Ravens rushed for 234 yards and Joe Flacco played just well enough not to blow the game. It may sound dramatic, but last week’s win officially ended the New England dynasty. So now the Ravens have another dynasty to contend with: the Colts. Colts finished the season 14-2, but neither of their losses came when the starters played a full game. Peyton Manning won his record 4th MVP award last week, and with good reason. Manning finished the season with 4,500 yards, 33 touchdowns and a club-record 68.8 completion percentage. There really isn’t much else to say about Manning. He and his Colts just know how to win.

It used to be Tony Romo couldn’t win in December. Then he won three straight to close out the season. The accusations then became Romo couldn’t win in the playoffs. He shut those people up with an impressive 34-14 win over the Eagles on Wild Card weekend. Now most of the critics are silent and the pundits are calling the Cowboys the most dangerous team in the NFC. Whether or not that’s true remains to be seen, but these Cowboys today are, without a doubt, the most confident Dallas team in years. A lot was said about the Vikings slide at the end of the season. They lost three of four at one point and looked nothing like the team that started the year 10-1. But all three of those losses came on the road. Their final game of the season was at home, and they shellacked the New York Giants 44-7. Minnesota is a fast team that’s built for games played indoors. Luckily for them, this one is at the Metrodome.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys meet for the third time this season – and for the second time in six days – when they clash on Saturday night in Arlington. Also in the NFC, the defending conference champion Arizona Cardinals get another crack at the Packers at University of Phoenix Stadium after falling to Green Bay at home in Week 17.

The Cardinals and Packers meet on Sunday afternoon in the desert following the AFC Wild Card showdown between the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens at Gillette Stadium. The Patriots-Ravens tilt is the only fresh matchup this weekend: The Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets will throw down again at Paul Brown Stadium on Saturday afternoon after the Jets smashed the Bengals in the Sunday Nighter.

Perhaps the only surprise bigger than this weekend’s unprecendented redux is the list of teams that didn’t make it to the postseason in 2009. Among the disappointments are the reigning Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, who simply weren’t the same team without Troy Polamalu in the lineup.

AFC Playoff Matchups

NY Jets at Cincinnati – Saturday, 4:30 PM ET

Bet on Cincinnati Bengals -2½ or New York Jets 2½. Totals are over 34.0 (-110) and under 34.0 (-110). Moneylines for this game are Cincinnati Bengals -135 and New York Jets +115.

The Jets (9-7, 9-7 ATS) snuck into the playoffs by drilling the Bengals (10-6, 7-9 ATS) 37-0 as 9.5-point road favorites in the regular season finale on Sunday night, but expect a different affair when the teams hook up to kick off the playoffs on Saturday.

Cincinnati will bring its best game after resting many of its starters for long stretches against New York on Sunday. The Jets needed to win to get in, while the Bengals had already clinched the AFC North heading into the final game of the schedule.

That said, New York is among the hottest spread wagers in the league. The Jets are 5-1 ATS and SU in their last six games. For its part, Cincy is only 1-6 against the number (3-4 SU) in its last seven contests.

Baltimore at New England – Sunday, 1 PM ET

Bet on New England Patriots -3 (-120) or Baltimore Ravens 3 (even). Totals are over 43.0 (-110) and under 43.0 (-110). Moneylines for this game are NewEngland Patriots -175 and Baltimore Ravens +155.

The Patriots (10-6, 7-7-2 ATS) will be without wide receiver Wes Welker when they tackle the Ravens (9-7, 9-7 ATS) in Foxborough on Sunday.

Welker tore both the ACL and MCL in his knee in New England’s 34-27 loss at Houston (-7) on Sunday, and is expected to miss the remainder of the playoffs should the Pats advance past the Ravens.

Welker’s absence leaves a hole in New England’s offense that won’t be easily replaced, especially on short notice. Expect oddsmakers to open the Patriots in the neighborhood of 4-point chalk against Baltimore, but don’t be surprised if action comes in on the Ravens as a result of Welker’s injury.

NFC Playoff Matchups

Philadelphia at Dallas – Saturday, 8 PM ET

Bet on Dallas Cowboys -4 or Philadelphia Eagles 4. Totals are over 45.0 (-110) and under 45.0 (-110). Moneylines for this game are Dallas Cowboys -200 and Philadelphia Eagles +170.

With two SU and ATS wins over the Eagles (11-5, 9-7 ATS) this season, the Cowboys (11-5, 9-7 ATS) cashed the NFC East despite having the same record as their archrival.

Dallas looks to defeat Philadelphia for the third time this season – and for the second week in a row – on Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium.

Eagles backers had better hope their team was playing possum on Sunday, when the Cowboys (-3) shut out Philly 24-0 at their new stadium. Fifth in scoring offense this season at 26.8 points per game, the Eagles have put up only 16 points in their two meetings with the Cowboys.

Green Bay at Arizona – Sunday, 4:40 PM ET

Bet on Arizona Cardinals 0 or Green Bay Packers 0. Totals are over 47.0 (-110) and under 47.0 (-110).

In yet another rematch from Week 17, the sizzling Packers (11-5, 11-4-1 ATS) stay right where they are to begin the postseason against the Cardinals (10-6, 9-7 ATS) on Sunday afternoon.

Green Bay manhandled Arizona 33-7 to close out the regular season on Sunday, covering easily as 3-point underdogs against the NFL point spread.

You’d be foolish to wager against the Pack at the moment, considering they’re an impressive 7-0-1 ATS (7-1 SU) in their last eight games.

The winners of the mediocre NFC West for the second straight season, the Cards have played under the total in six of their last seven outings (4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS).

College football betting comes to a close when the Alabama Crimson Tide and Texas Longhorns collide for the national title at the Rose Bowl tonight (December 7th, 2010). Oddsmakers have set the college football point spread at -4 in favor of Alabama, while the total is set at 46 points.

Ever since the teams were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 at the beginning of bowl season, the spotlight has shone the brightest on the big-name talents – players like Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and Alabama’s Heisman-winning running back Mark Ingram.

There has been a lot of talk about the two teams’ defenses, which both ranked among the Top 3 in the country. As well as a lot of coverage on the coaching battle between the Crimson Tide’s Nick Saban and the Longhorns’ Mack Brown.

However, when the whistle blows and push comes to shove, it will be some of the lesser-known players making the difference. Colt McCoy and Ingram will do what they do, but the winning team will be the one whose talents step up to the challenge.

Impact Players

D.J. Monroe/Marquise Goodwin (Texas KR)

Perhaps the biggest wild card heading into Thursday’s title game is the status of Longhorns kick returner D.J. Monroe. The talented red-shirt freshman, who was second in average kick return yards in the nation with almost 36 per game including two touchdowns, has missed the last three games after getting arrested for a DWI in November. Freshman Marquise Goodwin could get the nod from coach Brown, who hasn’t decided who he will start on special teams. Goodwin has averaged just over 22 yards per return and found the end zone in a win over Texas A&M. Alabama is susceptible to big returns on special teams, ranking second last in the SEC in opposing kick return yards (26.55) and giving up two touchdowns on returns this season.

Trent Richardson (Alabama RB)

Richardson put together an impressive freshman campaign behind Ingram. He rushed for 640 total yards (49.23 per game) and found the end zone six times. Against Florida in the SEC Championship, the explosive back carried the ball 11 times for 80 yards and finished ranked 13th in the conference in yards per game.

Hunter Lawerence (Texas K)

If it wasn’t for the steady foot of Hunter Lawerence, the Horns wouldn’t be in the national title game. The senior kicker launched a 46-yard field goal as time expired to edge the Nebraska Cornhuskers 13-12 in the Big 12 Championship. He has hit 88 percent of his field goal attempts this season and hasn’t missed since a blowout win over UCF on November 7. Last season, he was perfect in Texas’ win over Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl, booting one field goal and three extra points.

Colin Peek (Alabama TE)

Alabama’s tight end is quickly becoming the team’s go-to guy in the crunch. Colin Peek was on the receiving end of a touchdown in each of the Tide’s last two wins, including a 39-yard day on three catches against the Gators. The Georgia Tech transfer was recently on the cover of Sports Illustrated catching that score against Florida and is playing a bigger role since returning from a knee injury.

Texas: The Week That Was

The Longhorns were very fortunate to slip by the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 13-12, and win the Big 12 Championship Game. Texas didn’t figure to be sorely tested by Nebraska, but with defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh sacking UT quarterback Colt McCoy four and a half times, the Huskers carried the play for most of the evening. Heading into the final few seconds of regulation time, Mack Brown’s Longhorns trailed by a score of 12-10.

Then Texas got very lucky. McCoy threw a pass out of bounds with one second left, while Nebraska’s coaches argued that time had expired. UT kicker Hunter Lawrence was able to step onto the field and hit a 46-yard field goal on the final play to lift the Longhorns to victory.

Alabama: The Week That Was

The Crimson Tide maxed out in a forceful 32-13 thumping of Florida in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 5 in Atlanta. For a full year, Nick Saban’s squad dreamed of getting a rematch against the same group of Gators that defeated the Tide in the 2008 SEC title tilt. Those 12 months of waiting were channeled into a frighteningly good performance, as Alabama whipped the defending national champions on both sides of the ball. The Tide outrushed Florida, 251 yards to 88, and converted 11 of 15 third downs compared to the Gators’ 4 of 11 rate. After taking a 19-13 lead to the locker room at halftime, Bama shut out Florida in the second half and pulled away for an easy 19-point triumph.

The Week That Is:

The last time Texas played in a national championship game – the 2006 Rose Bowl – the Longhorns were a clear underdog to a team that was perceived to be vastly superior. The USC Trojans were being hailed as one of the great college football teams of all time, but Mack Brown’s boys begged to differ. Quarterback Vince Young led a spirited comeback from a late 38-26 deficit, as Texas tripped the Trojans, 41-38, on a touchdown with 19 seconds left in regulation time.

Let that occasion serve as an example of what could happen when Texas faces Alabama for the 2009 national championship. Alabama played the best game it could possibly play one month ago against Florida, while Texas’s offense couldn’t have played any worse than it did against Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship Game. Alabama will come down to earth, and Texas will be better. The question is this: Will Texas improve enough to beat a less-than-perfect Bama bunch?

The odds suggest not. Texas has struggled on offense for much of the year, and Alabama’s physicality is second to none. The Longhorns might start strong, but Bama should wear down Texas in the fourth quarter.

Former NFL All-Pro Wide Reciever Tim Brown Makes His BCS Championship Prediction

Former Heisman Trophy winner and All-Pro wide receiver Tim Brown has been bringing his football expertise into your living room all season long at Betflix at BetUS, giving you his college football betting picks. And he’s back this week, to bring you his preview of the biggest game of the year: The 2010 BCS National Championship game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Texas Longhorns.

In the game, Brown likes Alabama. As he mentioned, for Alabama, it starts with their No. 1 ranked defense, which allowed just 11 points per game this year.

It is a defense that is led by several All-Americans, including Butkus award winner Rolando McClain, and is a group which did an excellent job of shutting down Tim Tebow and the high-scoring Florida offense in the SEC Championship game. In the game, Florida, a team which was averaging over 30 points per contest coming in, was held to just 13 by Alabama’s aggressive defensive attack. The Crimson Tide also ranked second in college football in total defense, allowing just 241 yards per game, as well as second in run defense as well.

Brown also believes that Alabama’s offense is due for its biggest game of the year. He cites Heisman Trophy winning running back Mark Ingram as the biggest difference in this game. Ingram finished the season rushing for 1542 yards and 15 touchdowns. In his analysis of this game, Brown compares Ingram’s skill at running back to one of the all-time greats, former Dallas Cowboy Emmitt Smith.

Alabama is a team which got better in every game it played, finishing 13-0 in the rugged SEC. Included in those 13 wins, were a staggering nine against bowl teams, with six of those victories coming by double-digits. And not only were they the only team to beat Florida in 2009, but as we mentioned before, they did so in dominating fashion.

The biggest key for Alabama that Brown didn’t have time to mention, is the continued development of quarterback Greg McElroy. The redshirt junior came into this season having never started a game in Tuscaloosa, and obviously went undefeated in his first year replacing the departed John Parker Wilson.

McElroy got better as the season went on as well, throwing for eight touchdowns and just one interception in his last five games. He also completed over 66 percent of his passes in the last two wins, victories over Auburn and Florida, both winners this bowl season.
